A massive glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung mountain caused deadly flash floods along the Nepal-China border on 26 August 2026.

Scientists have determined that a large piece of ice and rock broke away from the mountain and fell about 1.2 kilometres.

The impact created enormous friction, which melted the ice and released a powerful wall of water into the Trishuli River valley.

The flood moved roughly 72 kilometres downstream, and debris reached speeds of around 180 kilometres per hour.

The disaster has killed more than 1,000 people and left over 4,400 others missing.

At least 1,050 deaths were confirmed in Nepal and 16 in Tibet.

Nepalese authorities reported that about 3,916 people remained missing in Nepal, with another 546 missing in Tibet.

Among those who are still missing, there are 583 foreign nationals from 38 different countries.

The flash flood devastated the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts of Nepal and Gyirong County in Tibet.

The flooding caused enormous damage to infrastructure across the region.

It destroyed 41 bridges and approximately 42 kilometres of roads.

Thirteen hydropower projects were completely wiped out, which removed 431 megawatts of electricity from the national power grid.

The important Gyirong Port border crossing between Nepal and China was also destroyed.

Around 1,200 people were displaced from their homes, and roughly 93,000 people were affected overall.

The United Nations has estimated that 65,000 people urgently need clean water and sanitation services.

"This is one of the worst disasters that Nepal has experienced in recent years," said a United Nations spokesperson.
