Global Study Reveals Plastic Packaging as the Most Prevalent Form of Coastal Litter Worldwide

A comprehensive global study has confirmed that plastic food and drink packaging constitutes the single most pervasive category of coastal litter on Earth.

Researchers analysed data drawn from over 5,300 shoreline surveys spanning 94 countries, making this the most extensive investigation of its kind ever undertaken.

The findings, published in the journal One Earth, revealed that plastic wrappers, bottles, lids, and caps appeared in the coastal debris of 93% of nations examined.

Richard Thompson, founder of the University of Plymouth's international marine litter research unit, emphasised that the dominant items were ordinary, everyday products.

He acknowledged that the prevalence of single-use plastics had not come as a surprise, yet the sheer consistency with which these items surfaced across all seven continents had taken him aback.

No other category of environmental pollution along coastlines proved as widespread as plastic packaging.

The researchers synthesised information from 355 existing studies, filtering for surveys that employed comparable methodologies and categorised debris by type.

Their confidence in the accuracy of each country's data depended on the volume and quality of available studies.

By extrapolating from the 94 countries with direct data, the team generated estimates for an additional 18 nations, thereby broadening the scope of their analysis considerably.

The study arrives at a critical juncture, as United Nations negotiations aimed at establishing a binding global treaty on environmental pollution from plastics have reportedly stalled.
