A massive glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung mountain caused catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-China border on 26 August 2026.

Scientists determined that a section of ice and rock measuring roughly 0.2 square kilometres had broken away from the mountainside.

The enormous mass fell approximately 1.2 kilometres, and the friction generated by the impact melted the ice almost instantly.

This released a devastating wall of water and debris that surged into the Trishuli River valley at terrifying speed.

The flash flood travelled roughly 72 kilometres downstream, with debris reaching speeds of around 180 kilometres per hour.

The disaster devastated the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts in Nepal, as well as Gyirong County in Tibet.

At least 1,050 people were confirmed dead in Nepal, while 16 deaths were reported in Tibet.

Nepalese authorities stated that approximately 3,916 people remained missing in Nepal and a further 546 in Tibet.

Among those unaccounted for were 583 foreign nationals from 38 countries.

The physical destruction caused by the flood was immense.

The disaster destroyed 41 bridges and approximately 42 kilometres of roads, cutting off access to remote communities.

Thirteen hydropower projects were completely wiped out, removing 431 megawatts of generating capacity from Nepal's national electricity grid.

The Gyirong Port border crossing between Nepal and China was also completely destroyed.

"We have never witnessed destruction on this scale in our country's history," said a senior Nepalese government official.

Around 1,200 people were displaced by the disaster, while roughly 93,000 people were affected overall.

The United Nations estimated that 65,000 people urgently needed access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

"Delivering humanitarian aid to the affected areas has been extremely challenging because so many roads and bridges have been destroyed," a United Nations spokesperson explained.

International relief organisations immediately began coordinating efforts to provide food, shelter, and medical supplies to survivors.

Nepal's government put preliminary damage estimates at about 200 billion Nepalese rupees, which is equivalent to approximately 1.3 billion United States dollars.
