Football games for 750 young children in Scotland were cancelled last weekend because of serious behavioural problems.

The children, aged five and six, were part of a programme called Fun 4s.

However, the environment was far from fun.

In the first week of the season, referees gave out seventy-two red cards.

Reports describe adults showing aggression and even head-butting at matches that were designed for small children.

This is not just a problem in Scotland.

People who work in youth football across the country have confirmed that the situation is very bad.

One youth coach said, "We need much stronger leadership and governance in children's football, because the current systems are not working."

The existing rules and campaigns have not been enough to change the behaviour of aggressive adults on the sidelines.
