The Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced that British conductor Daniel Harding will become its next music director.

The 50-year-old maestro has been chosen as the successor to Gustavo Dudamel, who has led the orchestra since 2009.

Harding's appointment will begin in the 2027 to 2028 season, and his initial contract will last for six years.

Dudamel will leave his position in August 2026 because he is moving to the New York Philharmonic.

He will serve as music and artistic director there.

However, he will keep a close connection with the Los Angeles orchestra as its artistic and cultural laureate.

In his new role, Harding will oversee all programming for the performing arts organization.

This includes concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Ford.

He will also work with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles.

Harding will conduct eight weeks of programming in his first season, which will increase to twelve weeks in later years.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 and has a long history in classical music.

Over the years, the orchestra has premiered works by famous composers such as Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and John Adams.

During the past fourteen years, the orchestra has won eleven Grammy awards for recordings that were made with Dudamel.
