Landmark NHS Blood Test Trial for Multiple Cancers Falls Short of Primary Objective

A pioneering blood test designed to detect over fifty types of cancer has failed to achieve its primary goal in a large-scale clinical trial involving approximately 142,000 NHS patients.

The results, unveiled at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual conference in Chicago, revealed that the Galleri test did not significantly reduce late-stage cancer diagnoses.

Had the trial succeeded, it would have marked a transformative breakthrough in medical research methodology and early cancer detection worldwide.

The study, which constitutes the world's first randomised controlled trial of a multi-cancer early detection test, enrolled 142,942 asymptomatic participants aged fifty to seventy-seven.

Each participant underwent annual blood draws over three years while continuing to receive standard cancer screening.

Researchers had hypothesised that supplementing conventional screening with the Galleri blood test could shift cancer diagnosis to earlier, more treatable stages, thereby improving patient outcomes substantially.

Doctor Julie Gralow, who serves as the chief medical officer and executive vice-president of the oncology society, cautioned against drawing overly simplistic conclusions.

She acknowledged that while the data exhibited some encouraging trends toward tumour downstaging, the trial ultimately did not meet its predefined primary endpoint.

Not only did the test fail to achieve statistical significance in reducing late-stage diagnoses, but it also raised fundamental questions about the viability of current multi-cancer detection approaches.

One senior oncology delegate, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, characterised the outcome far more bluntly.
