Record-breaking temperatures hit several European countries in late June this year.

France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany all experienced extreme heat.

Germany's national weather service reported that the country had never faced such intense heat so early in the year.

The extreme weather has also reached the United States.

Large parts of the central and eastern regions are now living under heat warnings.

Temperatures are expected to reach between 100 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 38 to 46 degrees Celsius.

Scientists say that heat waves like these put enormous strain on the human body.

When daytime temperatures stay above 30 degrees Celsius and nights do not cool below 20 degrees, the body struggles to recover.

Young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with health conditions are especially at risk.

However, some scientists believe that humans can adapt to hotter conditions over time.

Professor Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann, a physician at the University of Augsburg in Germany, explained this idea.

She said that the human body can adapt, and those adaptations are stronger in people who are continuously exposed to heat.

Professor Traidl-Hoffmann is also the director of the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Helmholtz Munich.

She has been researching environmental diseases for many years.

Her work focuses on treating patients who suffer from illnesses that are caused by climate change and extreme weather conditions.
