EN: The conjunction 'while' is used at the beginning of a sentence to introduce a concession (meaning 'although' or 'despite the fact that'), creating a contrast between a widely held belief or background fact and a striking main clause argument.
While conventional wisdom suggests that humans cannot regenerate organs, recent stem cell research challenges this boundary.
EN: The passive form 'be relegated to' means to be assigned to a lower, less important, or specific category or status. It is often used to emphasize that something is no longer considered realistic or prominent.
Once considered cutting-edge science, the theory was eventually relegated to the history books.
EN: The relative clause 'what no other creature has managed' uses the nominal relative pronoun 'what' (meaning 'that which' or 'the thing which') as the direct object of the main verb 'has achieved', incorporating both the antecedent and the relative pronoun.
The team accomplished what many industry experts thought was impossible.
EN: 'Speculative fiction' is an umbrella term encompassing genres such as science fiction, fantasy, and dystopian fiction that speculate about scenarios outside human reality. Mentioning it alongside 'immortality' highlights how eternal life has traditionally belonged to human imagination rather than empirical biology.
EN: Apposition is used here to give essential background information about a proper noun. 'A marine biologist at Texas A&M University' is a noun phrase in apposition that renames and describes 'Associate Professor Maria Pia Miglietta'.
Dr. Sarah Chen, a renowned astrophysicist at Harvard University, delivered the keynote address.
EN: The Present Perfect tense ('has emphasized') is used to present a past action as relevant news, while the reported speech noun clause ('that this species possesses...') uses the Present Simple tense ('possesses') because it describes a timeless scientific fact.
Researchers have confirmed that light travels faster than sound.
EN: The preposition 'for' followed by a gerund ('evading') functions as a post-modifier for the noun 'mechanism', explaining the specific purpose or function of the mechanism.
Engineers developed a new algorithm for detecting network anomalies.
EN: The conjunction 'whether... or...' is used to introduce alternative possibilities or conditions, indicating that the main clause remains true regardless of which condition applies. Here, it is inserted parenthetically to elaborate on 'hostile conditions'.
The organism can adapt to extreme environments, whether in the deep sea or high-altitude mountains.
EN: The adverbial subclause of time introduced by 'when' ('when the jellyfish encounters hostile conditions...') functions as a conditional frame within the nominal 'that'-clause object of 'explained'.
She observed that when the temperature drops sharply, the cells initiate a protective response.
EN: The verb 'refuse' is followed by a to-infinitive ('refuse to perish'). The use of 'simply' as an intensifying adverb emphasizes the straightforward yet astonishing nature of the action.
EN: A colon (:) is used here to introduce an explanation, elaboration, or breakdown of the concept mentioned before it ('a predictable lifecycle'). It signals that the following clause details the specific steps of that lifecycle.
The experiment yielded a clear result: the new compound significantly reduced bacterial growth.
EN: The non-defining relative clause 'which subsequently bud off...' uses 'which' to refer back to the preceding noun 'stationary polyps'. It adds descriptive details about what the polyps do next without restricting the identity of the polyps themselves.
The trees shed their leaves in autumn, which subsequently enrich the surrounding soil.
EN: The defining relative clause 'that mature into adults' modifies 'free-swimming medusas'. It specifies the final development stage of these medusas, using the phrasal verb 'mature into' to describe growing or developing into a full stage.
Researchers identified several larvae that mature into rare species of beetles.
EN: The perfect participle ('Having + past participle') is used to express an action that was completed before the action in the main clause took place. It emphasizes the sequential order of events.
Having finished the report, she submitted it to the manager.
EN: Compound verbs connected by the conjunction 'and' allow two sequential or simultaneous actions ('deteriorate and die') to share the same subject ('these adults') and adverbial modifier ('gradually').
The old autumn leaves slowly fade and fall.
EN: The conjunction 'however' can be placed as a parenthetical element between commas (an adverbial insertion) immediately after the subject. This interrupts the subject-verb flow to create a formal contrast with the preceding context, which is common in academic and scientific writing.
The initial trial, however, failed to produce any statistically significant results.
EN: The reduced relative clause pattern 'known as [noun/term]' uses a past participle to modify a preceding noun phrase ('an astonishing cellular process') without requiring a full relative clause like 'which is known as'. This is a concise way to introduce specialized terminology.
The patient was diagnosed with a rare condition known as Alice in Wonderland syndrome.
EN: The preposition 'through' expresses the instrument or method by which an action is accomplished ('through an astonishing cellular process'). It indicates the medium or mechanism enabling the subject to achieve the result.
The researchers managed to isolate the gene through a complex series of laboratory experiments.
EN: Turritopsis dohrnii is colloquially known as the 'immortal jellyfish.' In scientific discourse, 'transdifferentiation' refers to a non-stem cell transforming into a different type of cell. Popular culture often misinterprets this as literal eternal life, but scientifically, it represents a complete developmental reset, effectively cloning itself into a youthful state.
EN: The prepositional phrase 'rather than' is used to express preference or contrast, meaning 'instead of'. When followed by a verb, it usually takes a gerund (-ing form) when functioning prepositionally, or a bare infinitive when contrasting main verbs.
Rather than complaining about the problem, she offered a practical solution.
EN: When a single subject performs multiple actions in sequence, the verbs form a compound predicate linked by commas and a coordinating conjunction (e.g., 'A, B, and C'). All verbs must maintain parallel grammatical structure and tense.
The researcher entered the laboratory, turned on the equipment, and began the experiment.
EN: Adverbs ending in '-ly' (like 'genetically') are used to modify adjectives ('identical'), which in turn modify nouns ('polyp'). This creates a precise compound modifier describing the degree or nature of the quality.
The twins were raised in different countries but remained remarkably similar.
EN: Participle phrases starting with '-ing' (e.g., 'likening...') can function as adverbial modifiers to elaborate on the main clause, showing manner, result, or simultaneous action without repeating the subject.
The professor delivered a compelling lecture, inspiring many students to pursue careers in scientific research.
EN: The idiomatic structure 'liken A to B' means to compare A to B in order to highlight their similarities, typically used in formal or academic contexts.
Economists often liken the flow of money to the circulation of blood in a human body.
EN: The verb 'revert' followed by the preposition 'to' indicates a return to a previous state, condition, or habit.
After the system crash, the software automatically reverted to its default settings.
EN: Inverted conditional clause omitting 'If'. When 'If' is omitted in a hypothetical or second conditional clause, the auxiliary verb 'Were' moves to the front of the sentence before the subject ('Were + subject + adjective/noun/to-V'). This creates a more formal, literary tone.
Were I in your position, I would accept the job offer immediately.
EN: Mixed conditional/unreal hypothetical in the present/future (Second Conditional). It uses a past subjunctive form ('were') in the conditional clause and 'would + base verb' in the main clause to express an unlikely or contrary-to-fact hypothetical scenario.
If technology allowed us to live forever, society would face unprecedented ethical challenges.
EN: Inverted Conditional Clause (Inversion without 'if'): In formal and literary written English, conditional sentences can omit 'if' by inverting the auxiliary or modal verb (e.g., 'should', 'had', 'were') with the subject. Here, 'should scientists eventually decipher' is an inverted form of 'if scientists should eventually decipher', expressing a hypothetical or conditional condition.

EN: Link Verb 'Prove' + Adjective Complement: The verb 'prove' can function as a copular (linking) verb meaning 'to turn out to be' or 'to be shown to be', followed directly by an adjective (e.g., 'prove profound') without requiring 'to be'.
The new strategy could prove vital for the company's long-term survival.
EN: Defining Relative Clause with 'that': The relative pronoun 'that' introduces a restrictive (defining) relative clause modifying 'the precise genetic mechanisms', providing essential information about what these mechanisms do ('that govern this remarkable process').
Researchers have discovered a unique compound that inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
EN: Negative Inversion: When a sentence begins with a negative expression or a restrictive phrase like 'Not without reason', 'Never', or 'Seldom', the subject and the auxiliary/modal verb are inverted to place emphatic focus on the initial phrase.
Not without reason did she decide to move to a new city.
EN: Non-finite Participle Clause (Result Clause): The present participle clause ', prompting...' functions as an adverbial modifier indicating a natural consequence or result of the preceding main clause.
The company launched a revolutionary product, driving its stock price to an all-time high.
EN: Nominal Content Clause / Indirect Question: The subordinator 'whether' introduces a noun clause acting as the direct object of 'investigate', expressing uncertainty or possibility regarding a future benefit.
Scientists are studying whether the new compound can effectively inhibit tumor growth.
