EN: The absolute construction 'with + noun/pronoun + participle' (here: 'with research confirming...') acts as an adverbial modifier indicating circumstance, explanation, or concurrent evidence. It is widely used in journalistic and formal registers to smoothly append supporting data without creating a heavy coordinated clause.
The company announced record profits, with analysts projecting continued growth into the next quarter.
EN: The present perfect tense ('have undergone', 'has vanished') expresses past actions whose effects or relevance continue into the present moment. In this context, 'has vanished since 2021' highlights an ongoing deficit starting from a specific reference point up to the present.
Over ten species have disappeared from this valley since conservation efforts stalled.
EN: The formal collocation 'undergo a transformation' combines the transitive verb 'undergo' (meaning to experience, endure, or pass through) with an adjective-noun pair. 'Staggering' is a participle adjective meaning 'deeply shocking or astonishing', effectively conveying magnitude and gravity.
The historic district has undergone a profound revitalization over the past decade.
EN: Glaciers are not only a defining national symbol of Switzerland and a cornerstone of Alpine tourism, but they also serve as the 'water tower of Europe', feeding critical rivers like the Rhine and Rhône. Consequently, reports of rapid glacier shrinkage carry profound ecological, economic, and cultural resonance across the entire European continent.
EN: The past participial phrase 'published in an annual monitoring report' serves as a non-restrictive (parenthetical) modifier reducing a relative clause ('which were published in...'). Set off by commas, it provides supplementary background information about the subject 'The findings' without disrupting the primary clause structure.
The document, leaked to international media outlets, ignited widespread public outrage.
EN: The preposition 'by' followed by a percentage or quantity denotes the extent or margin of change (e.g., 'shrank by 5.5%'). This contrasts with 'shrank to 5.5%', which would indicate the final remaining amount or level.
Inflation fell by 1.2 percent over the previous quarter.
EN: The postpositive focus adverb 'alone' immediately follows a noun phrase ('the first eight months of 2026') to emphasize exclusivity or the striking scale of something within a limited scope, equivalent to 'merely' or 'only'.
In this fiscal year alone, the tech firm generated over ten billion dollars in profit.
EN: Glacier monitoring in Switzerland has a rich scientific heritage dating back to the late 19th century. Because the Swiss Alps act as the 'water tower of Europe', providing freshwater to major transboundary rivers like the Rhine and the Rhône, annual reports measuring glacier shrinkage have significant ecological and geopolitical resonance across the continent.
EN: The participle clause 'driven largely by fossil fuel pollution...' functions as a non-finite adjectival modifier modifying the subject 'This dramatic rate of glacier melt'. Inside this clause, 'trapping heat in the atmosphere' is a present participle phrase modifying the noun 'pollution'.
The rapid loss of biodiversity, caused primarily by human activities destroying natural habitats, poses an existential threat.
EN: The idiomatic expression 'fall just short of [something]' means to fail to reach an amount, goal, or level by a very small margin.
The film's opening weekend box office fell just short of the studio's ambitious expectations.
EN: The past participle 'established' in 'the record established in 2022' functions as a reduced relative clause (short for 'which was established in 2022') modifying the noun 'record'.
The safety protocols established during the summit will remain mandatory for all participating agencies.
EN: In climate science and environmental journalism, '2022' serves as an infamous benchmark for European glaciology, during which the Alps experienced unprecedented ice loss due to severe Saharan dust events and summer heatwaves. Comparing current measurements to this specific record highlights the extreme severity of ongoing melt trends.
EN: Appositive phrases (noun phrases placed next to another noun to explain or identify it) are often set off by commas. Here, 'a glaciologist at ETH Zürich and the report's lead author' provides credential details identifying the subject 'Matthias Huss'.
Dr. Sarah Jenkins, an expert in marine biology, warned that ocean acidification is accelerating.
EN: The verb 'fail' followed by a to-infinitive ('fail to do something') is a formal, elevated way of expressing that someone does not do something, often implying an inability, neglect, or shortfall rather than an active refusal.
Many consumers fail to realize the hidden costs associated with fast fashion.
EN: Embedded interrogative clause acting as the object of a verb/preposition: 'how rapidly Alpine regions are being reshaped' functions as the noun phrase complement/object of 'grasp'. Notice the word order remains statement order (how + adverb + subject + verb: 'how rapidly' + 'Alpine regions' + 'are being reshaped'), not inversion.
Policy makers must understand how urgently environmental regulations are needed.
EN: ETH Zürich (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich) is Switzerland's premier science and technology university, consistently ranked among the world's top institutions. In climate and earth sciences, research originating from ETH Zürich holds authoritative weight globally.
EN: The intransitive verb 'lie' (meaning to be in a flat position or situated) has the past form 'lay' and past participle 'lain'. It is frequently confused with the transitive verb 'lay' (to put down; past: 'laid'). Here, 'lay beneath' indicates the physical location of the sites in the past.
Ancient ruins lay hidden beneath layers of dense jungle for centuries.
EN: Restrictive relative clause modifying 'sites': 'which merely one generation ago lay beneath hundreds of metres of ice'. The adverbial phrase 'merely one generation ago' is placed immediately after the relative pronoun 'which' to create rhetorical emphasis on the shortness of the elapsed time before the verb 'lay'.
Areas which until recently harboured rich biodiversity have suffered severe degradation.
EN: Tense contrast for dramatic shift: The past tense 'lay' inside the relative clause describes the historical state, sharply juxtaposed with the present perfect 'have now become' in the main predicate of the that-clause to highlight an irreversible ongoing transformation.
Communities that once thrived on fishing have now turned to eco-tourism for survival.
EN: In Alpine environmental discourse, referring to time as 'one generation ago' (roughly 25–30 years) contrasts sharply with geological time scales. Glaciers normally take millennia to form and advance; losing hundreds of metres within a human generational span underscores the unnatural, climate-driven collapse of the European cryosphere.
EN: Inverted conditional structure ('Were + subject + to-infinitive'): A formal, literary inversion replacing 'If + subject + were to-infinitive'. It is used to hypothesize about present or future unlikely situations without using the conjunction 'if'.
Were they to discover the truth, the consequences would be catastrophic.
EN: Generic/impersonal pronoun 'one': In formal registers and academic writing, 'one' serves as an indefinite pronoun meaning 'any person' or 'people in general'. Consistency is maintained across clauses ('Were one... one would...').
One cannot simply ignore the ethical implications of this decision.
EN: Parallel contrast with 'rather than': Used to coordinate two noun phrases, emphasizing preference or actual state ('a desolate moonlike landscape') while explicitly negating or contrasting the alternative ('the vast glaciers...').
The author focuses on psychological nuances rather than action-packed sequences.
EN: In climate science discourse, the term 'moonlike landscape' (often also described as 'lunar landscape') is frequently used by researchers to convey the shocking visual transition of deglaciated Alpine valleys. When glaciers recede completely, they leave behind pulverized grey rock, scree, and moraine entirely devoid of vegetation or soil, evoking the barren sterility of celestial bodies rather than typical Alpine beauty.
EN: The present participle phrase 'afflicting Swiss glaciers' functions as a reduced relative clause (short for 'which is afflicting Swiss glaciers'), post-modifying the noun phrase 'The environmental crisis'.
The drought plaguing northern regions has devastated agricultural yields.
EN: 'Stems from' is an idiomatic phrasal verb meaning 'originates from' or 'is caused by'. It is typically used in formal, academic, or journalistic contexts to establish causal relationships.
Much of the company's current financial difficulty stems from reckless expansion.
EN: In Alpine nations like Switzerland, glaciers are not only vital freshwater reservoirs and hydroelectric sources, but also integral to cultural heritage and alpine tourism. Describing the rapid melt as an 'environmental crisis' reflects the profound socioeconomic and environmental stakes across Central Europe.
EN: The past participial phrase 'compounded by...' functions as a non-restrictive parenthetical modifier set off by commas. 'Compound' here means to make a problem or difficult situation worse by adding another complicating factor. Using the passive participle allows concise expression of causal synergy.
High inflation rates, compounded by unexpected supply chain disruptions, threatened the economic recovery.
EN: The compound adjective 'snow-poor' follows the pattern of '[Noun] + [Adjective]', meaning deficient in or lacking snow. It is modified by the adverb 'unusually'. Such compound adjectives are common in formal or technical journalism to convey precise environmental or meteorological conditions concisely.
The region suffered through an unusually cash-poor fiscal year.
EN: In Alpine environmental reporting, glaciers rely on winter accumulation (heavy snowfall creating an insulating mass) and are threatened by summer ablation (high temperatures causing melting). The combination of a 'snow-poor winter' followed by 'scorching summer heatwaves' represents a catastrophic scenario for glaciologists, often termed a double blow to glacier mass balance.
EN: An appositive noun phrase (here: 'a collaboration between...') is placed between commas immediately after the head noun ('The report') to provide essential descriptive or background context without creating a separate subordinate clause.
The study, an initiative launched by international environmental agencies, revealed alarming trends in sea level rise.
EN: The reporting verb 'documented' introduces a content clause ('that individual glaciers lost...'). In scientific and formal registers, 'lose + [amount] of + [metric]' is standard phrasing for quantifying physical reduction or depletion.
The reservoir lost nearly three metres of water depth during the severe summer drought.
EN: The cryosphere (derived from Greek 'kryos' meaning frost/cold) refers to the frozen water parts of the Earth system. In Switzerland, institutions like GLAMOS (the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network) hold high scientific authority because Alpine glaciers directly regulate the continent's major freshwater systems (e.g., the Rhine and Rhône rivers).
EN: The verb 'describe' often takes a gerund (-ing form) as its direct object to convey witnessing or engaging in an ongoing experience or state (e.g., 'described standing...').
The explorer described trekking through dense rainforest for weeks without seeing sunlight.
EN: A summative appositive (noun phrase apposition) uses a noun phrase ('a scene he characterized as...') separated by a comma to summarize, comment on, or rename the entire preceding clause or experience.
The stadium fell completely silent during the final penalty kick, a moment everyone held their breath for.
EN: The structure 'characterize / describe / define something as [adjective/noun]' is used to present a subjective judgment or attribute a specific quality to something.
Critics characterized the new policy as fundamentally flawed and shortsighted.
EN: In Alpine countries such as Switzerland, glaciers are not merely geological features but cultural emblems tied to national identity and alpine tourism. The phrase 'profoundly unsettling' used by a prominent glaciologist reflects growing ecological grief (solastalgia) experienced by researchers witnessing the rapid erasure of millennia-old landscapes during their own careers.
EN: The perfect gerund ('having + past participle') is used after certain reporting verbs (like 'confirm', 'admit', 'deny') to explicitly emphasize that the action occurred prior to the time of the main verb.
The company confirmed having received multiple complaints before launching an internal investigation.
EN: Reduced relative clauses: The past participle 'lost' functions as a postpositive modifier shortening the relative clause 'which were lost'. This is common in formal and academic writing for conciseness.
Artifacts discovered during the excavation will be exhibited at the national museum.
EN: 'Although' introduces a subordinate concessive clause that sets up a contrast with the main clause. In formal written English, clauses introduced by 'although' often carry negative polarity ('have not yet') to qualify the subsequent factual assertion.
Although the team has not yet finalized the design, they agreed on the underlying architecture.
EN: In scientific reporting on climate science, researchers rigorously distinguish between preliminary field observations and peer-reviewed, quantified tallies. The contrast between 'not yet compiled a formal tally' and 'confirmed having witnessed' reflects standard academic caution—alerting the public to undeniable qualitative trends while formal quantitative verification remains in progress.
EN: When a negative or restrictive correlative like 'Not only' is fronted to the beginning of a clause for rhetorical emphasis, subject-auxiliary inversion is required in that clause (Auxiliary verb 'does' + Subject 'this accelerating collapse' + Bare infinitive 'reshape'). The second clause ('but it also...') maintains normal subject-verb word order.
Not only did the policy reduce carbon emissions, but it also stimulated technological innovation.
EN: The correlative conjunction pair 'Not only... but (also)...' joins two parallel ideas with emphasis on the second element. In advanced formal writing, the modal or auxiliary verb ensures structural balance, and 'also' can be placed between the subject and lexical verb or omitted entirely.
Not only has the company expanded into Asian markets, but it has also established vital research partnerships.
EN: The phrase 'accelerating collapse' features a present participle ('accelerating') functioning as a pre-nominal participial adjective, describing an ongoing, dynamic process of deterioration. In contrast, 'urgent questions' functions as a collocated abstract noun phrase meaning pressing concerns.
The accelerating decline of biodiversity raises urgent questions for conservationists worldwide.
EN: The Alps are frequently referred to as the 'water tower of Europe' because meltwater from Alpine glaciers feeds major European river basins like the Rhine, Rhône, and Po. Consequently, glacier loss is not merely an aesthetic or localized Swiss environmental issue; it directly impacts irrigation, nuclear power cooling, inland navigation, and drinking water availability across the entire European continent.
EN: Inverted Third Conditional: When omitting 'if' in counterfactual past conditionals, the auxiliary verb 'had' is inverted with the subject ('Had governments acted...' instead of 'If governments had acted...'). This structure elevates the register to formal or literary English.
Had the warnings been heeded earlier, the disaster could have been prevented entirely.
EN: Modal Perfect for Past Speculation ('might have been'): The modal auxiliary 'might' combined with the perfect infinitive ('have been') expresses a hypothetical past possibility that did not actually occur.
With better funding, the research project might have succeeded much sooner.
EN: Adverbial Degree Modifier with Comparative ('more decisively' and 'fundamentally different'): 'More decisively' modifies the verb 'acted' to indicate manner and degree, while 'fundamentally' acts as a stance adverbial modifying the adjective 'different' to denote an essential, radical difference.
The new policy fundamentally transformed the economic landscape.
EN: In climate journalism and scientific communication, counterfactual conditionals like 'Had governments acted...' are frequently used to convey urgency and accountability. By contrasting an irreversible environmental consequence with historical inaction, writers emphasize that current ecological collapses were once preventable policy choices.
