An investment fund specialising in natural capital has committed to financing a large-scale rewilding initiative on a sprawling North Yorkshire estate.

Rebalance Earth, which describes itself as a natural capital asset manager, is investing in the 1,100-hectare Broughton Sanctuary estate near Skipton.

The firm's overarching objective is to treat nature as critical infrastructure, thereby generating financial, environmental and social returns simultaneously.

Should the project succeed, it could establish a compelling precedent for private investment in ecosystem restoration across the United Kingdom.

Although the North Yorkshire landscape appears idyllic from elevated vantage points, its ecological condition tells a different story.

Decades of intensive agricultural use have degraded substantial portions of the moorland and grassland.

The rewilding project aims to reverse this deterioration by restoring natural habitats and reintroducing biodiversity to the region.

Advocates of sustainability argue that such interventions are no longer optional but imperative, given the accelerating pace of climate disruption.

Rob Gardner, co-founder and chief executive of Rebalance Earth, emphasised that recent extreme weather events had underscored the urgency of nature restoration.

He noted that the sweltering temperatures in May and unprecedented rainfall in June were prompting a fundamental shift in public perception.
