Unprecedented Whale Graveyard Unearthed in the Depths of the Indian Ocean

An international team of researchers has identified the oldest, deepest, and most extensive whale graveyard ever documented, located within the Diamantina fracture zone in the south-eastern Indian Ocean.

The necropolis, as scientists have termed it, stretches across hundreds of miles of ocean floor and plunges to depths exceeding seven kilometres.

Some fossilised remains discovered at the site date back more than five million years, offering paleontology an extraordinary window into ancient marine ecosystems.

While whale falls — the scientific term for cetacean carcasses that descend to the seabed — have been previously recorded, the vast majority were found at depths below four kilometres.

What distinguishes this discovery is not merely its unprecedented scale but also the remarkable biodiversity thriving around the decaying remains.

Researchers observed that the carcasses were teeming with organisms, many of which belong to species entirely unknown to science.

Doctor Giovanni Bianucci, a co-author of the study based at the University of Pisa, emphasised that the findings demonstrate how profoundly life can adapt to extreme environments devoid of light and subjected to immense pressure.

He argued that humanity remains far from comprehending the true biodiversity of our planet, suggesting that similar unexplored habitats could harbour countless undiscovered species.

The study also yielded unique geological and biological data on beaked whales, a group he described as "mysterious and elusive."

In an accompanying commentary, Stephen J Godfrey of the Calvert Marine Museum in the United States characterised the whale graveyard as a truly unique discovery with the potential to generate numerous groundbreaking findings.

He likened the research to a trailer for an epic film series, implying that these initial results merely hint at the revelations yet to come.

The team, comprising scientists from China, Italy, and New Zealand, employed a submersible vehicle to survey the fracture zone, a geological feature formed by tectonic activity along the ocean floor.
