EN: Appositive noun phrases (set off by commas) provide non-essential descriptive details about the preceding noun without needing a relative clause.
The Irishman, a sprawling crime epic by Martin Scorsese, chronicles the life of a union hitman.
EN: The restrictive relative clause 'that ultimately ended in policy failure' modifies the noun phrase 'a 1980 conference on climate change', specifying the tragic or futile outcome of the event.
They launched an investigation that ultimately uncovered systemic corruption within the department.
EN: Director Tom McCarthy won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for 'Spotlight' (2015), which depicted investigative journalism at The Boston Globe. Referencing his prior film establishes prestige and signals that 'A Statement' is a serious, detail-oriented docudrama tackling institutional shortcomings.
EN: The structure 'days before [clause]' functions as an adverbial time modifier specifying an exact temporal proximity before a major event. In narrative writing, this pattern is often stacked after a calendar date ('In late October 1980, days before...') to heighten dramatic tension and historical context.
Weeks before the treaty was ratified, negotiators met secretly in Geneva to resolve the boundary dispute.
EN: The verb 'summon' typically takes the pattern 'summon someone to [a location/an event]', carrying a strong formal, authoritative, or legal register compared to 'invite' or 'call'.
The committee summoned top executives to the capital to testify about the data breach.
EN: The infinitive phrase 'to draft climate recommendations' functions as an adverbial of purpose (infinitive of purpose), modifying the main predicate 'summoned... to a beachfront Florida hotel' to explain the intended goal.
Delegates gathered at the convention center to revise the constitutional draft.
EN: The timing emphasized in the sentence ('days before Ronald Reagan was elected' in 1980) is historically momentous. The 1980 election of Ronald Reagan marked a profound political turning point in the United States, shifting national policy from environmental regulation and institutional science towards deregulation and market-driven energy policies.
EN: The concessive conjunction 'Although' introduces a subordinate clause of contrast. Notice that unlike Chinese ('雖然...但是...'), English does not pair 'although' with 'but' in the main clause.
Although the team faced severe budget cuts, they delivered the project ahead of schedule.
EN: The present participle phrase 'spanning 36 hours' functions as a post-nominal modifier (reduced relative clause equivalent to 'which spanned 36 hours'), succinctly describing the duration of the sessions.
The negotiations involved a series of debates spanning three consecutive days.
EN: The verb 'struggle' followed by an infinitive ('struggled... to reach') expresses great difficulty in attempting to achieve something. The collocation 'reach consensus on [topic]' is formal and standard in journalistic and policy contexts.
Delegates struggled to reach consensus on emission targets before the summit concluded.
EN: The phrase 'marathon session' is a common American political and journalistic idiom referring to an exhausting, extended meeting where negotiators or lawmakers work without sleep to hammer out a deadlock. In climate politics, this captures the tragic historical gap between clear scientific warning and political paralysis.
EN: The present participle clause 'producing...' acts as a participle clause of result (or attendant circumstance), modifying the entire preceding action. It shows the natural consequence or outcome of transcribing every word.
The dam burst overnight, causing catastrophic flooding across the valley.
EN: The post-positive adjective phrase 'hundreds of pages long' modifies 'a document'. In English, expressions of measurement (duration, length, age, height) frequently follow the noun when paired with adjectives like 'long', 'old', 'wide', or 'tall'.
They discovered a tunnel nearly two miles long beneath the ancient fortress.
EN: The relative adverb 'when' introduces a restrictive relative clause modifying the temporal noun 'an era', defining the specific historical or social conditions of that time period.
We have entered an age when artificial intelligence reshapes daily communication.
EN: The phrase 'commanded public trust' reflects the late-20th-century American perception of institutional science and technocrats, where bipartisan consensus around scientific experts was far more common than in today's polarized political landscape. The use of a 'stenographer' underscores the meticulous, official nature of governmental hearings before automated audio recording became standard.
EN: The sentence begins with a present participle phrase ('Drawing on...'), serving as an adverbial modifier of manner or source for the main clause. The implied subject of 'drawing' must be identical to the subject of the main clause ('McCarthy').
Drawing on archival records, the historian reconstructed the diplomatic negotiations.
EN: The phrasal verb 'draw on (or draw upon)' means to use something (such as information, knowledge, or experience) as a resource or inspiration for an activity.
She drew on her background in neuroscience to write the bestselling thriller.
EN: Nathaniel Rich's 2019 book 'Losing Earth: A Recent History' expanded on his landmark 2018 New York Times Magazine article documenting the pivotal decade (1979–1989) when humanity came close to addressing climate change before political consensus fractured. In Hollywood, films often option and adapt specific chapters or journalistic pieces rather than entire non-fiction books.
EN: The non-defining relative clause is introduced by 'whose' as a possessive relative pronoun modifying 'the ensemble cast'. It adds descriptive background information about the members of the cast rather than identifying which cast is meant.
The veteran director assembled a stellar production team, whose innovative methods redefined modern cinematography.
EN: The passive construction 'are forced together' uses 'force + object + prepositional/adverbial phrase' in the passive voice ('be forced together') to indicate that external circumstances, rather than voluntary choice, compel the characters into close physical proximity.
During the blizzard, several stranded commuters were forced together inside a remote mountain cabin.
EN: In film and theatre, an 'ensemble cast' refers to a production where multiple principal performers share roughly equal screen time and dramatic importance, rather than revolving around a single superstar lead. Tom McCarthy often employs ensemble storytelling (notably in his Oscar-winning film 'Spotlight') to depict complex institutional dynamics.
