Acclaimed Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, whose films have long been regarded as searing allegories of civic passivity under authoritarian rule, is set to premiere a new work at Cannes.

The film, entitled Minotaur, marks his first cinematic release in nine years and arrives after a harrowing battle with COVID-19 that nearly claimed his life.

Had it not been for intensive medical intervention at a clinic in Hanover, Germany, the director might never have returned to filmmaking.

In late 2021, Zvyagintsev contracted a severe case of COVID-19 that left him with approximately 90% lung damage.

For several months, the filmmaker was unable to move his limbs or perform basic tasks such as holding a spoon.

He spent a total of eleven months in various hospitals, during which time Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

It was precisely this devastating convergence of personal and geopolitical crises that plunged the director into what he described as immense pain and deep despair.

Against all odds, the COVID recovery proved successful, and Zvyagintsev gradually relearned fundamental motor skills before channeling his anguish into creative work.

Minotaur is an adaptation of Claude Chabrol's 1969 French thriller The Unfaithful Wife, transposed to a provincial Russian town.

The narrative follows a business executive on the verge of laying off his workforce who simultaneously discovers his wife's infidelity.
