Households Outshine Business in Australia's Rooftop Solar Revolution, Report Finds

A new analysis has revealed a striking disparity in rooftop solar deployment between Australia's residential sector and its commercial counterparts.

Australia currently leads the world in residential solar on a per capita basis, boasting approximately 22 gigawatts of installed capacity as of December last year.

Yet businesses have managed to install only about 5.6 gigawatts, roughly a quarter of that figure, despite consuming considerably more electricity than households.

The findings, published by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, argued that accelerating commercial rooftop solar could prove pivotal as aging coal plants are decommissioned.

The report's authors emphasized that the commercial and industrial sector must assume a far more prominent role if Australia is to meet its renewable energy targets.

Were businesses to fill their available roof spaces with solar panels, the resulting capacity could substantially offset the loss of retiring fossil fuel generation.

Crucially, the report noted that commercial and industrial solar installations can be deployed far more swiftly than utility-scale alternatives.

Unlike large-scale projects, rooftop solar on commercial premises generally does not necessitate extensive planning approvals or costly new transmission infrastructure.

Such regulatory and logistical advantages could shave several years off the timeline typically associated with major renewable energy projects, thereby hastening Australia's broader energy transition.

The analysis classified commercial and industrial solar users as non-residential entities, encompassing manufacturers, retailers, agricultural operations, hospitals, and educational institutions.

Johanna Bowyer, lead Australian electricity analyst at the institute and co-author of the report, characterized the nation's household solar achievement as remarkable.

Nevertheless, she cautioned that without comparable renewable energy adoption across the commercial sector, Australia risks falling short of its decarbonization ambitions.
