The London Science Museum has ended its partnership with the oil and gas company BP.

The two organisations have worked together for several decades, but the museum announced on Friday that the agreement would not continue.

Campaigners who have pushed for this change have called it a seismic shift in how museums handle corporate responsibility.

Sir Ian Blatchford, the director of the Science Museum Group, said that the partnership had drawn to a close at the end of the current contract.

He explained that BP's generous contributions had helped the museum inspire more than eleven thousand education and science professionals.

He added that this work had brought science to life for over one million young people across the country.

For many years, campaigners have criticised BP's partnership with the museum.

They argued that the oil company had an insidious influence over how science, technology, engineering and maths were taught in the United Kingdom.

Environmental advocacy groups said that such partnerships raised serious questions about business ethics because fossil fuel companies were using museums to improve their public image.

This is not the first time that the Science Museum has cut ties with an energy company.

In 2024, the museum ended its relationship with the oil company Equinor.

That decision was made because Equinor had failed to reduce its carbon emissions enough to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement.

The agreement aims to limit global heating to one point five degrees Celsius, which is considered essential for protecting the environment.
