Australia has been attracting record levels of international screen production in recent years.

Now Western Australia is making a big bet that its new Perth Film Studios can bring some of that work to the west coast.

The state government has invested 233.5 million dollars to build the facility, which is located on a former cow paddock in Whiteman, on Perth's north-eastern edge.

The studio's first chief executive, Tom Avison, recently returned from a sales trip to Los Angeles.

During four days in the city, he held about 16 or 17 meetings with major companies such as Netflix, Universal, Warner Brothers, and Disney.

Before coming to Perth, Avison helped open Sky Studios Elstree outside London, which hosted productions like Wicked and Jurassic World.

He said the Perth role attracted him because it offered the chance to shape an entire industry.

The Perth Film Studios site covers 16 hectares and includes four large sound stages, production offices, and workshops.

There is also a backlot that is larger than the playing field at Perth's 60,000-seat Optus Stadium.

The total investment has reached about 290 million dollars when the 57 million dollars committed to support the studio's first ten years of operation is included.
