The Nigerian Senate has formally approved an ambitious revenue target of 11 trillion naira for the Nigeria Customs Service during the 2026 fiscal year.

The endorsement came after a comprehensive budget defence session conducted before the Senate Committee on Customs, chaired by Senator Isah Jibril.

Despite acknowledging significant external economic headwinds, the committee expressed unwavering confidence in the agency's capacity to fulfil its revenue obligations.

Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, who led the customs delegation, struck a cautiously optimistic tone during the proceedings.

He disclosed that the service had thus far generated 4.43 trillion naira in revenue, a figure he conceded fell short of projected expectations.

Nevertheless, Adeniyi emphasised that the organisation remained committed to pursuing its policy objectives and enhancing collection efficiency throughout the remainder of the fiscal period.

Adeniyi identified the escalating crisis in the Middle East as the principal impediment to achieving the revenue target, arguing that geopolitical instability had severely disrupted cargo movements and diminished import volumes at Nigerian ports.

He cautioned that unless the volatile situation involving the United States and Iran were to improve, the customs service would continue to contend with these formidable external factors.

Analysts have noted that such disruptions could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria's broader economic outlook and fiscal planning.
