This year marks 100 years since the birth of Marilyn Monroe, one of cinema's greatest icons.

Monroe has been remembered for her glamorous roles in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot.

However, her final film, The Misfits, released in 1961, revealed a different side of her artistic capacity.

The film was directed by John Huston and written by Arthur Miller, who was Monroe's husband at the time.

This collaboration between Monroe and Miller produced one of the most interesting performances of her career.

In The Misfits, Monroe played a character named Roslyn, a woman who travels to Reno for a quick divorce.

After her divorce, Roslyn meets a group of unusual local men.

Among them are an ageing cowboy named Gay Langland, played by Clark Gable, and a rodeo rider named Perce Howland, played by Montgomery Clift.

Together, this group drifts through Nevada's bars and rodeos before heading into the desert.
