‘British food will disappear’: trade deal after Brexit is hitting UK farmers hard

British farmers are confronting an unprecedented financial crisis as post-Brexit trade deals flood domestic markets with cheaper imported meat.

Liz Webster, who farms 647 hectares in Wiltshire, south-west England, has witnessed roughly four hundred pounds wiped off each beef animal she sells.

This substantial loss, on livestock typically fetching between two and three thousand pounds per head, stems directly from Australian imports entering the market.

Webster cautioned that British food would inevitably disappear from mainstream supermarkets should current trends persist.

She argued that domestically produced food would become a niche product, accessible only to wealthy consumers willing to pay premium prices.

Remarkably, supermarket beef prices have remained broadly unchanged, meaning retailers rather than producers are capturing the margin from cheaper imports.

The damage extends well beyond the beef sector.

A comprehensive study published last year revealed that the quantity of farmed exports to the European Union had plummeted by nearly half.

Simultaneously, the value of those exports declined by thirty-five percent, while the variety of goods shipped fell by a third.

Analysis conducted by the National Farmers' Union further demonstrated that poultry exports dropped by thirty-eight percent, with beef, lamb, and dairy sectors all suffering double-digit percentage declines.

Not only have farmers borne the brunt of these trade disruptions, but consumers have also felt the sting.

A 2023 study estimated that Brexit had already added seven billion pounds to food prices across the United Kingdom.

Were the government to reconsider its trade policy framework, British agriculture might yet find a sustainable path forward.

However, without intervention, the prospect of homegrown produce becoming an unaffordable luxury appears increasingly plausible.
